What is a boudoir photo shoot? Why should you have one? Women choose to have a boudoir photo shoot for many reasons. These reasons include creating gifts for their wedding day, having met fitness goals, or celebrating themselves. If any of these reasons resonate with you, then a boudoir photo shoot is for you.
Before you strip down to your skivvies, here are a few things to keep in mind so that you’ll know what to expect in a boudoir session.
Boudoir Photoshoot Meaning
In simple terms, boudoir is a French word that refers to a woman’s private sitting room/dressing room. It’s where she can be alone, relax, be herself, and undress into something more comfortable for her.
For boudoir photography, you should define what makes you comfortable and feel sexy. Unlike glamour, in boudoir photography, women pose partially clothed or in lingerie, or make use of light, shadows, and angles to imply nudity.
Never anything explicit. That is not boudoir photography. It’s not even nude photography. The goal for any boudoir session would be to show your comfort in a setting that conveys class and elegance while leaving you feeling sensual and sexy.
For this reason, the location becomes key.
Boudoir Photo Shoot Locations
You can expect to have your session at a location that best fits our boudoir shoot definition. A place where, just by going to it, you would feel you were about to experience something out of the ordinary from your routine. For this reason, I prefer to book a luxury hotel room or other private places, such as an Airbnb. It’s easy to transform a space like that into a private sitting room.
The elegance of the setting will make it easier for you to feel comfortable and at ease, knowing your pictures will convey class and sensuality. It will also show the work you would have placed in preparing for your photo shoot.
You can expect hair and makeup artists to tend and treat you like a queen for a day.
During our initial consultation, we would have discussed looks and outfits that best suits your vision for the boudoir photo shoot. So, if you ever imagined yourself with hair extensions and fake lashes, a boudoir photo shoot would be your time to shine. If you wanted to rock a corset and try a burlesque or pin-up look, you could do it! Everything is possible.
The Photo Shoot
Once your photo shoot is underway, you can expect me to guide you through a pose list. I would ask you to arch your back, shift your body, and lift your legs.
My assistant will be present to tend to anything you would need. She will also help me help you. While we work through the pose list, we will talk, and I will do my best to get you to be in the moment and laugh.
Your body language will reflect the ease and comfort you feel in being in the moment and understanding just how beautiful you are.
If you’re not sure how to achieve a specific pose, I would be happy to show you myself. I have no problems demonstrating any poses that are essential in creating a fantastic boudoir picture.
After the Boudoir Photo Shoot
We will have come to the point of all of your effort: your pictures. You’ll be amazed at how beautiful and tasteful they came out. These pictures do not deserve to be kept as a digital file in your camera roll and forgotten.
You’ll then understand why every woman who chooses to have a boudoir session will want their pictures presented in a professional-quality album. This way, they have a keepsake they can give as a gift to their future spouse, to a significant other, and most important of all, to themselves.
The pictures featured in this post are from my boudoir photo shoot with Adrianna of Austin, Texas. She signed a model release and was gracious in allowing me to write about her experience in my blog post, Boudoir Photography, at the Driskill Hotel in Austin.
She wrote about her experience.
During the shoot, I felt comfortable, empowered, creative and sensual. I was ready to do another shoot immediately and we will forever be friends. It was a wonderful experience and for someone who is a mom getting to put myself to be queen for the day was amazing and I can’t wait to work with [Eduardo] again.
Thank you, Adrianna, for allowing me to share your experience with other women who may feel the same way about themselves as you do.
